This is the easiest DIY foaming hand soap recipe ever. This simple toxic free foaming hand soap is made of only 2 ingredients: Castile soap, essential oils (optional) and water. It’s the best hand soap for sensitive skin!
Why should you use this natural foaming hand soap?
One of my children’s hands react quite badly to hand soap. Especially when we are traveling and use the public bathroom’s antibacterial soap. The first time this happened I wasn’t prepared. By the time our all day traveling ended the back of the hands were inflamed red & sore.
We put a grated potato on her hands overnight, stuck them in some socks and thankfully the hands were almost back to normal in the morning. But who wants to do that every trip?
We’ve started carrying our own soap that we use at home in a small travel bottle in our diaper bag. There’s been no inflammation or reaction as long as we use our natural, non-toxic soap for sensitive skin.
Our body is made up of good gut bacteria. Eating sourdough breads and fermented foods support your gut health. However, toxins and chemicals can harm our guts, cause inflammation and a host of other issue.

That’s why I love making my own products. Then I know that they are good for sensitive skin, toxic and chemical free and healthy for my family. After foaming hand soap, another one of my favourite is my easy all purpose cleaning spray.

Other Foaming hand soap supplies
Best of all foaming hand soap is fun! The little ones love putting bubbles on their hands and scrubbing them all over. I also find my littles don’t use too much soap as one pump looks like a lot of soap on their little chubby hands.
However, if they are the type to pump multiple times I have a mom soap hack for you. A friend of mine simply dilutes the soap with more water. Then the kids get the right amount of soap without wasting a ton of soap and money. And it’s still bubbly and fun!
The most affordable option is:
The best option is of course with essential oils is amber glass. Then you avoid any plastic toxins leaching into the soap.
Why these ingredients…
Castile Soap
Castile soap is very natural, non-toxic and very good for sensitive skin. It is also great for babies too!
Castile soap is biodegradable. It doesn’t contain any harsh chemicals or toxins and is good for your health. Castile soap is all natural, there is no artificial fragrances, synthetic nor harsh ingredients. As a result Castile soap is not gut damaging nor endocrine disrupting.
I personally like Dr. Bronners’s Castile unscented soap as I can use it for anyone and anything, I simply add essential oils to create my own scents. Also it is a made with a plant oil based, where as other soaps are usually animal based. I use this soap in so many different homemade body and bath homemade products!

Essential Oils
My best advice is to use up whatever you have on hand, no matter the brand (as you can see I did in my images).
However, my new favourite essential oil brand is Plant Therapy. It typically is more affordable, but I love it most as it’s so easy to see what is safe for kids, pets, nursing or pregnancy. All important for us mamas to know!
Lemon essential oil has natural anti-fungal, antibacterial and immune boosting properties. It is a very powerful cleanser and has a fresh, energizing scent. It is also a fairly inexpensive essential oil typically.
Other essential oils I like to use, especially during flu season, for an extra immune boost is something like Thieves or the equivalent Germ Destroyer KidSafe or Germ Fighter from Plant Therapy. I like using an immune boost essential oil as it actually is an all-natural antibacterial and immune boosting, cleansing soap.
PRO TIP: If you have sensitive skin, try only using one oil at a time and see how your body responds. You may need to only use one oil or none at all. The Castile soap is very cleansing even without the added boost of an essential oil.
Homemade foaming hand soap instructions
Fill a foaming hand soap container 1/4 full of Castile soap.
If you are using essential oils add in about 10 drops of cleansing lemon essential oil.
Then optionally, add in 3-5 drops of an immune boosting essential oil, like Germ Destroyer KidSafe or Germ Fighter or Thieves for an extra immune boost.
If you have sensitive skin, be careful with using essential oils. I’d suggest only trying one at a time, starting with lemon, to see if you react to it at all.
Finally top up slowly with cold water. This avoids the soap from foaming up before it is full of water.
Place the lid on and give it a little shake.
Now you’re ready to use your all-natural, gentle foaming hand soap!
