Why I started making our own Diaper Rash Cream for my Babies
As a new mom I had no idea what to do for rashes. I started out putting only coconut oil on my baby’s bottom. That didn’t seem to work for us and hot diaper rashes ensued.
I tried the traditional Pentaten that a relative recommend while visiting. I didn’t love that it was a petroleum product, and was suspicions that it was toxic. (Which if you look it up on Yuka App you’ll see that it is.) Regardless it didn’t work.
Next I tried Burt’s Bees diaper rash ointment. It worked WAY better, got rid of the rashes much faster and was more natural. However, my sensitive baby started to react to it too. (It scores ok on the Yuka app.)
I wanted something that worked on diaper rashes, prevented bum rashes. And something I could use with confidence because I knew it was 100% excellent natural ingredients.
This lead me to googling DIY natural baby bum creams. And guess what..
I found a gentle DIY diaper rash cream that I tweaked to work exceptionally on my baby’s sensitive skin!
This cream worked both as a preventative and healing cream for bad diaper rashes!

What are the Benefits of Bentonite Clay in homemade diaper rash cream?
- Bentonite Clay is healing as it fights bacteria, it’s antibacterial.
- It pulls toxins from the body.
- It is healing for the skin and helps balance oil production, even removing dead skin and clearing up clogged pores.
- It nourishes the skin containing lots of minerals, such as potassium, calcium, sodium, magnesium, silica, iron and copper.
Why is Zinc Oxide important in baby bum cream?
Essentially zinc oxide creates a dry moister barrier for the skin so it can heal without being constantly in a moist and not so clean environment.
Zinc oxide is what keeps your baby’s pee from just washing off the homemade diaper rash cream so it can do its job in healing your baby’s sore bottom.
In a similar way zinc oxide can provide a barrier from the sun and skin.
Coconut oil & Shea butter
Coconut oil is wonderful as it’s natural and has antibacterial and anti-fungal properties. This along with the shea butter makes this homemade diaper rash bum cream a great creamy and smooth texture.
Essential Oil Variations for bum cream
- Lavender is gentle and healing to the skin
- Roman Camomile is soothing and healing for the skin
- Tea tree has anti yeast properties as well as other anti-microbial, anti-fungal, and anti bacterial properties. Only use in small amounts however as its stronger.
- Calendula tincture, though not an essential oil, is a powerful and gentle healing and soothing flower.
Some individuals are very sensitive to essential oils, if you suspect this it’s ok to completely leave out all essential oils. The homemade diaper rash cream will still work without them.
Instructions: How to make the best all natural Diaper Rash Cream from scratch
1. Make a double boiler:
In a small saucepan fill a couple inches with water and place it on the stove top.
Choose a glass or metal bowl that fits on top of the saucepan but doesn’t touch the water (this will become your double boiler).
2. Measure out into the glass bowl the coconut oil and shea butter. Place the glass bowl on top of the pot and heat until the oil and butter have melted.
3. Carefully remove the hot bowl of melted coconut oil and shea butter onto a hot pad. Be very careful to avoid burning (If you do run cold water over the burn immediately and then apply aloe vera directly to the burn until you can seek the necessary help.)
4. Measure out the Bentonite clay and zinc oxide into the liquid.
5. Add a few drops of essential oils and/or calendula tincture, if using.
7. Mix together very well.
8. Pour into a glass mason jar and top with the lid.
Label your homemade diaper cream and place in the fridge to help it solidify faster so you can use it sooner.
Use your new 100% natural homemade diaper rash cream as needed.
If you’re using disposable diapers, apply a little of this soothing bum cream as a preventative with each diaper change.
Can I use this DIY Diaper Rash Cream on Cloth diapers?
The short answer is yes! Though I’d personally leave the zinc oxide out.
The reason I leave out the zinc oxide is I’m concerned it will build up a moister barrier on the cloth diapers making them less absorbent over time.
When my baby’s bottom gets a diaper rash while I’m cloth diapering, I simply throw on a disposable with this cream until it has healed up.
How to Prevent getting diaper rashes using this Natural DIY Baby bum Cream
I’ve found when using disposable diapers regular I can prevent a rash by putting a little of my DIY natural cream on as a preventative with every diaper change. This along with being quick to change those poopy diapers (especially once they are eating solids), we basically never ever get any diaper rashes!
This works, providing my baby isn’t consistently eating any foods that seem to cause a diaper rash.
